Chapter 7 - The Hunter
"ONLY TWO TYPES OF MEN hold power - the ruthless and the unlucky."
Old Erillian Proverb
Hunter General Mortaris Brauch stared glumly at the piece of paper presented to him by the sunup's messenger. The man was obviously nervous, standing before one of the most powerful men in the Empire. It didn't help that he had a reputation for being short-tempered, and the messenger knew he was delivering bad news.
Mortaris read the note over twice before throwing it into his fireplace. The crisp paper rapidly vanished as it hit the flames.
"Where was it exactly you said you had come from?" the Hunter General asked.
"Nor...Norvus, sir!" the messenger managed to splutter.
Without acknowledging the answer, Mortaris walked over to his desk and rang a small golden bell. The sound was barely perceivable, more akin to a wind chime than a real bell, yet within avarium the butler was in the room with the two men.
"You rang, sir."
"Tell the boy to ready my horse, and get someone to remove...â He looked the messenger up and down. "...this," he finally spat out the word.
"Oh, it's no trouble, sir, I can see myself..." the messenger started to say but was cut off by a crossbow bolt in his neck.
Mortaris casually rewound the folding hand crossbow before returning it to a holster on his belt.
"Anything else, sir?" the butler asked, pointedly ignoring the man gurgling away on the floor.
Mortaris dismissed the butler with a wave of his hand, pleased that he could finally return to his brooding undisturbed.
"A boy who died is freed from prison by a man whose name people are too afraid to tell me. Me!" he shouted in the otherwise vacant room. "And now a man and a boy of similar description were seen fleeing from a nothing of a town. Must I do everyone's jobs for them?"
He paced back and forth in his office, ranting until the butler appeared once more.
"Your horse is ready, sir. Will you require an escort, sir?"
Mortaris pondered the question for a moment before answering, "Yes, I suppose I should. The usual will suffice."
"Very good, sir."
